Ryanair reports record profits as O’Leary gets richer

It’s hoped that an impressive financial performance from Ryanair signals job security for thousands of cabin crew, pilots and airline support staff at the budget airline over the next few years. Ryanair currently employs 8,500 people and is hoping to add 1,000 staff this year.
Ryanair has reported a record €503m profit for the year to the end of March 2012, which is a 25% increase on last year. This news comes despite higher fuel costs hitting the airline. However the low-frills airline has forecast lower annual profits of between €400m and € 440m for the next trading

Air India suffers pilot strikes and staff theft

A number of employees of Air India are being investigated for allegedly stealing alcohol and caviar from flights, according to a report by the BBC. India’s civil aviation minister Ajit Singh made a statement in the country’s parliament saying that Air India’s vigilance department is looking into 161 such cases dating back several years.
In one reported case, a flight purser was caught by the customs department while taking 372 mini liquor bottles from a plane. In another incident, a catering officer was found with 20,200 rupees (£233) worth of caviar taken from a chartered

Ryanair pulls late summer flights to Greek Islands

Ryanair has scrapped its late summer schedule to the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kos after a row with Greek tourism authorities, according to Travel Weekly. The airline has blamed its decision on a row over a marketing campaign to promote Ryanair routes to the islands.
A total of 82 flights a week will be cut a month before the end of the summer season, meaning thousands of holidaymakers will be left to make alternative arrangements.

BA steward put hoax bomb threat on toilet door mid-flight

A British Airways cabin crew member faces a custodial sentence after admitting leaving a hoax bomb warning on an airliner’s lavatory door mid-flight. He is due to be sentenced next month.

Brits arrested for ‘bomb scare’ on Thomas Cook Tenerife flight

Two British passengers on board a Thomas Cook flight caused an unnecessary bomb scare by telling cabin crew they had an explosive device in their hand luggage, according to a story in the Daily Mail. The aircraft was carrying about 200 passengers and was given priority to land due to concerns about the claim.
The incident on May 10 took place on a flight from Manchester to Tenerife. It is thought the pair – who have been named as Airam Paul Jerus, and Nathan Levi Trippier – had been drinking prior to the flight, although this has yet to be confirmed.

A Russian Sukhoi SuperJet with 44 people on board crashed into a volcano in Indonesia last Wednesday, with all those on board now presumed dead.
