#1  Questions for Emirates Cabin Crew  Posted 07/11/2010 at 20:05
Hi Guys

I've been offered the position of cabin crew for Emirates. I'm currentley doing the Medicals, dependant on this my DOJ is 13th December. I have a few question regarding what happens once you actually arrive in Dubai, what happens? Am quite nervous now, some of the questions are silly, but I can't find any information about them anywhere else.

*Does someone collect you at the airport?
*When do you find out where your appartment will be? I heard that Emirates are now locating new recruits in appartments in Sharjah, is this true?
*How soon does training start after you arrive in Dubai?
*What do you wear for the training?
*Is there anything specific, apart from, clothes, toiletries, shoes etc that you'd advise to bring with you. As far as I can tell Emirates provides pretty much everything in the appartment.  Do they give you a TV?
*How often do crew fly to Heathrow/Gatwick? How long in the layover?

Am sure I'll think of other questions before 13th December as well!!

1. Yes, you will have a greeter who takes you through immigration, getting your bags etc. You wait in Marhaba lounge while they process the docs then the driver picks you up to take you to your building. You sign in at security & they give you keys. If you already have a flatmate they may be home, they may be on flights. Or you may be with new joiners and they might not have arrived yet.

2. Accommodation comes on the portal anytime between 1 week before DOJ to just before you fly. It might change also; one girl in my group was supposed to be in UP but there was a problem with the apartment so she went to Al Nadha instead.

Yes some people are out near Sharjah (Al Qusais, Al Nahda, etc) yes it's further out but the buildings are newer and nicer. It's not expensive to get around if you use company buses to get closer to town before taking a cab.

3. You'll get 1-3 days off before training starts.

4. Bring 1-2 sets of business attire, 1 set being a suit as you wore to FI. You will need this for the medical day. On induction day dress business attire even if the form says 'casual'. And follow the grooming standards as per the email you signed and sent back. (Hope you saved it, if you did print it for reference and bring it with you. WIll save you time later on.)

On the 1st day they give you the red trainee shirts (x) which you will wear until Week 5 of training when you change to uniforms. So you will need 1-2 pairs of black TROUSERS ONLY, no skirts and some black FLAT shoes for the training. (Bring the trousers and shoes; they are not provided)

5. No they do not give you tv, microwave etc. They provide a fridge/freezer, oven, stove, washer (maybe dryer) which is shared by all. Anything else (even toaster) you must buy, but maybe your flatmate has it already. You will need to work this out if you want/need to buy your own or if they are happy to share. EK give you 500dhs towards getting toaster, kettle etc (plenty for that)

TV you won't have much time for anyway, get it later on. If you have a computer, bring it! Handy for many things but be aware if your flatmate does not have (or doesn't want to share) internet you'll need to borrow someone else's until your residence visa comes back (maybe 4 weeks) Also same if you move into an empty apartment with other new joiners.

6. It depens which fleet you are on (only Main Fleet flies to Gatwick) A380 does LHR and MAN, it's about 24hrs usually but could be less layover.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this LovelyEK.  Lots of answers there.

Am now having a few issues with my medicals now.  Apparentley the Hep B vaccination is a series of 3 injections which are given over 6 months (ie now, one week later, and then 6 months later), how have others done this? Have you had just had the first 2 injections, and get the remainder 1 in Dubai? Plus my nrse was being a bit of a pain, because she reckons I don't need it!!

Do Emirates require that I get a physical certificate to confirm I've have each of these vaccinations, or is a print out/screen dump sufficient from my doctors surgery?

How long has it taken others to complete their medicals, mine seems to be taking ages!! Emirates have said it should be ok if I get everything to them by the 3rd week of November as my DOJ is 13th December, if there is a delay, what are the chances that my DOJ will be delayed.  (I don't have a notice period from work).

Usually when you get vaccines you get a booklet which they stamp, sign or put the sticker from the injection box in (Like the size that can fit with your passport)

Otherwise if you get a doctor's report listing the vaccines taken & upload it, should be fine. They'll do a booklet for you when you go to the clinic here anyway. I think the 6 monthly one would be done here if your DOJ is before then. I'd say if you got the first 2 at home then they'd do the third one here, and PROBABLY won't charge you for it. I needed 2 vaccines and they didn't deduct them coz I got all the others.

Shouldn't be too much problem submitting that late, but upload each page as you get it so they know to expect more soon.

hey platinum, LovelyEY has answered all your questions, but just to let you know. Emirates will not put anybody in Sharjah, BUT yes Al Nahda&Al Qusais are close close of Sharhaj. I live in Al Nahda, and Im happy, why? Because i love my apartment and i love my flatmate, and if i want to go to downtown I just take the Emirates Bus to Headquarters and then a cab (cabs are really cheap). It's more important to have a nice apartment and a nice flatmate than a downtown area (in my opinion). On the other hand, 2 girls of my batch, their first flights: 3 to London! 2 to London Heathrow and 1 to Gatwick. It all depends on luck. We are mainfleet by the way. Oh and about the vaccines, dont stress. Hep B i only had the 1st dose in my country, got here and they put me the 2nd one and in a few months they will put me the 3rd one. So no need to worry. (To complete my medicals it took me 4 weeks). Best of luck

Cool beans. I'll start uploading all the completed forms. It's all slowly starting to come together. Everything else wasn't that difficult, vaccinations are proving to be a pain, esp vacirella and yellow fever!!

Puravida, one of the other guys that had his interview the same day as me, he has been going on and on about how all the new staff are been located in Sharjah and how awful it was there. So I was panicing.  But it's a relief to know the new appartments are still in Dubai and that they are nice.

How have you guys adjusted to living in Dubai. Is it quite strict, ie do you have to be all covered up when going out at night? Just trying to work out what kind of clothes to pack. I understand day time clothing should be quite conservative.

How was the training? Are both of you flying now? Am soooooo excited (and nervous).  Thanks for all your help guys, You're advice helped me loads during my open/assessment day and final interview. Appreciate it.

Also is there anything that you wish you knew/realised before getting to Dubai?

Yeah, I wish I realised how liberal it was. I didn't bring any of my party clothes and you can wear short dresses to a cluyb (within reason and what you feel comfortable with) HOWEVER having said that, they do tell you IF you have any problems while out, it can work against you if you're wearing really skimpy clothes. So, go party dress but leave something to the imagination :P

Also wrt apartments, some people have no perspective and complain about everything, I say, it's free and we don't have to pay anything of the utilities, WHO CARES!!! Hahaha! I have lots of friends in Qusais & Al Nadha, while yes it can be a pain sometimes they admit their flats are way nicer than mine and I live on SZR. I'd gladly move further out if it meant having a laundry, store room and an en suite bathroom!!!

If you had chicken pox as a child you don't need varicella, just a blood test showing you have antibodies for it. I had it lots as a kid so didn't need the vaccine.

hahahahaha i totally agree with lovelyEY, I wish I had brought more party clothes, especially short dresses...I didnt think it was allowed to. Oh and just a tip: make a list of all the things u use regularly so u dont 4get them...seriosly it might sound stupid, by I forgot so many daily things (SUNGLASSES, hair dryer, etc..) Yeah, there are people who hate living in Al Nahda/Al Quasis.. because its sooo far away bla bla bla bla... like loveley says: it's free and the apartments are big and pretty! I have my own full bathroom, nice furniture, I love it and I dont complain... but it's all of how u see it. And by the way it's not true.. not all new crew is allocated here, there are some new crew I know that was put in SZR, in one of the most populars buildings.. i guess it depends on luck. Acutally my flatmate lived in SZR and she asked to be moved here!!! She says to much noise, 3 bedroom apartment, to dark and small apart. IT'S ALL HOW YOU SEE IT AND WHAT U MAKE OF IT. Before coming here I was sooooo sad that I got Al Nahda, but now im glad I did! Dubai is strict in their culture...if u respect the culture, u will be fine. Know the do's and donts. Training was fun because it was like going back to high school but with a multicultural team... HOWEVER it was very HARD.. u have to study A LOT. Another thing, I don't know if u have it but FYI download skype.. it's not allowed to download here! Good luck!

Thanks for putting my mind at rest regarding the accomodation, I had a quick look on u-tube for Emirates accomodation (don't know what the location was of the one I saw), it does seem pretty awesome what they give you. Ooooo excited.

Going back to the medicals. Did you get your OPGs done, or were the bitewing x-rays sufficient? I think I know the answer!! Also I'm considering leaving the varicella, I can't find anywhere local that does it!!

Do you need to be a strong swimmer for the training in the swimming pool, what did it involve? Do they teach you how to apply make-up that lasts for hours.

Have already started packing my party dresses - lol. Do you get loads of perks within Dubai being a FA for Emirates? I just want to get there now!!!

There's quite a few perks that comes along being a FA, at least from what I've seen with family/friends working with EK ha. Few things that come to mind; I think you don't have to pay tax when you buy alcohol legally, also you've got facecards or something like that. Always ask if they accept them if you're going to clubs or events(not all events will allow you to use em, but there are a few). My mum used to help new recruits with nails and all that. She's not affiliated with EK at all, but from what I hear, yes they do teach you how to look wonderful. Boys and Girls. Not sure about the make up lasting for hours bit, but grooming is very very important for EK and they will definitely give you a few tips and such. :) Also, don't worry about the accommodation. I've been to quite a few places and they're all really really nice. Only problem is the area you're put in. It might be really sh*t and you have nothing interesting nearby or you're too far from what's going on, or maybe you're in an isolated area that's often crowded with strange men/construction workers and if you are a female, might feel slightly uncomfortable because they stare or something of the sort, but don't let that bother you, it's not so much of a problem honestly, especially with the Metro they just started and there's so many other ways to stop your location being this massive problem. I'm sure you'd find yourself being very happy with wherever they decide to put you, at least with your accommodation. Good luck with everything!
